Database Design & Development

A poorly designed database is the most expensive technical problem to fix in a growing product. Performance degrades unpredictably, schema changes become increasingly painful, and the data your business depends on becomes harder to trust. We design database schemas from the ground up for new products, audit and refactor schemas for existing systems, and build the data layer for applications that need to handle real transactional load: multi-tenant SaaS platforms, financial systems, healthcare records, logistics operations, and data-intensive APIs. We work across all major relational databases — PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle — and purpose-built NoSQL stores where the access pattern demands it. Every engagement covers data modelling, normalisation decisions, indexing strategy, query performance, backup and recovery, and full documentation.

What you get

Deliverables

Everything included in a standard engagement. Scope is agreed upfront — no surprises.

  • Entity-relationship (ER) diagram and logical data model
  • Physical schema: tables, columns, data types, constraints, foreign keys, unique constraints
  • Indexing strategy document — primary, composite, partial, and covering indexes
  • Stored procedures, functions, and triggers (where applicable)
  • Database views and materialized views for reporting layers
  • Migration scripts from existing schema (if refactoring an existing system)
  • Query performance audit report with optimised rewrites and EXPLAIN ANALYZE results
  • Multi-tenancy design pattern (row-level, schema-per-tenant, or database-per-tenant)
  • Backup and recovery strategy and runbook
  • Database user roles and permission model
  • Seed data and test dataset for development environments
  • Schema change management runbook (Flyway / Liquibase / Atlas)

How it works

Our process

Structured delivery means you know what happens at every stage — before we start.

  1. 01

    Requirements & Access Pattern Analysis

We review your application requirements, entity relationships, access patterns, write/read ratio, expected data volumes, and compliance constraints — translating them into a logical data model before any DDL is written.

  2. 02

    Schema Design & Normalisation Review

We produce the physical schema: tables, data types, nullable constraints, foreign keys, check constraints. We review normalisation decisions explicitly — documenting where denormalisation is deliberate and why — and address multi-tenancy patterns where relevant.

  3. 03

    Indexing Strategy & Performance Baseline

We design the indexing strategy based on your query patterns, run EXPLAIN ANALYZE on all critical queries, and establish a performance baseline with target response times agreed before handover.

  4. 04

    Migration & Integration

Schema is applied via migration scripts managed in version control (Flyway, Liquibase, or Prisma Migrate). For existing database refactors, we produce a zero-downtime migration plan and rehearse it in staging.

  5. 05

    Documentation & Handover

We deliver the ER diagram, full schema documentation, query performance report, backup and recovery runbook, and a schema change management guide so your team can evolve the database safely after handover.

Budget & timing

Investment & timeline

Pakistan-based delivery at a fraction of Western agency rates. Transparent pricing, no retainer traps.

Investment

$3,000 $35,000

per project

New database design for a product: USD 3,000–8,000. Schema audit + refactor + migration of an existing system: USD 6,000–18,000. Enterprise data warehouse or complex multi-tenant schema design: USD 15,000–35,000.

Timeline

310 weeks

estimated delivery

New schema design: 3–5 weeks. Schema audit + refactor + migration: 5–10 weeks. Enterprise data warehouse design: 8–14 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Database Design & Development.

Not necessarily. For early-stage analysis, we can query your operational databases directly or work from exports. A data warehouse (BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift) becomes worthwhile when: (a) your reporting queries are slowing down production databases, (b) you need to join data from 3+ different sources routinely, or (c) your data volume exceeds what Google Sheets can handle. We will advise based on your actual situation.
